Note: /1 This
population consists of three groups: (1) population with residence registered in other
township, town, or sub-district, but having actually resided in this enumeration area for
more than half a year; (2) Population with residence registered in other township, town,
or sub-district, but having actually resided in this enumeration area for less than half a
year; (3) Population with residence registration in this enumeration area not yet settled.
The data in this table are from the Sample Survey on Population Changes in 1997, which had
a sampling fraction of 1.028 of the total population.
Please also note, that this 1997 data include a new province: Chongqing, most of which was
previously a part of Sichuan. |
The table should be
read as follows:
Of the 1.24 million people in this sample survey, 1.17 million actually lived in the
township, town, or subdistrict, where they are registered. Some 69,300 people, however
were not registered were they lived, but in some other township, town, or subdistrict.
Please also note that this is not a 0.001% (one per million), but a 0.001028% survey of
the population. If we adjusted for the total population we can conclude that some 71.3
million people (or about 5.6 % of the population) in China did not live where they were
registered.
The percentage of people who do not live where they are registered is, however, much
higher in Beijing and Shanghai, where in 1997 some 16.5% and 13.3% of the population where
registered outside the area where they actually lived. |
